How often have I spoken of this. I am surprised that I have not told the story here in the FedWiki.
Years ago I had employed a skilled facilitator to work with our hospital executive team. We were each asked to stand, individually, in the center of the circle and state what we cared most about. When my turn came, I went to the center, not giving it any thought since I had participated in this exact exercise a few times before. What I heard my self say was not only a surprise to me, but I had no idea what it ment. It was as if someone else had spoken, yet it seem like it might be true. I had said, "Freedom and solidarity."
Now that was a weird thing to say in this setting.
Having heard myself utter these words, I puzzled over them for years. Finally I came to realize that AND was the key word. How is it possible to have both at the same time?
Years later the "solution" came to me: AND = PARTICIPATION.
The only way one can experience freedom and solidarity is to participate.
